Special teams sputter in Flin Flon

The Hawks were extremely pleased with their even strength play in Friday’s 4-2 loss in Flin Flon, but for one of the rare occasions this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season Nipawin’s special teams broke down, essentially costing them two points.

Jacob Michelson opened the scoring early in the first period at the Whitney Forum giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead that stood until halfway through the second. Carter Anderson scored a pair of power-play goals giving the Bombers a 2-1 lead, but Alex Bernauer tied the game with his eighth goal of the season and fourth this week following a hat-trick on Wednesday.

Anderson added another goal in the third, as did Justin Lies, all on the man advantage. Flin Flon finished 4/7 with the power-play, the Hawks were 0/6 including two lengthy five-on-three power-plays and another two man advantage late.

The Hawks outshot Flin Flon 41-36, Damon Cunningham made 32 stops in the loss.

La Ronge travels to Nipawin Saturday. Faceoff at the ‘Cage’ versus the Ice Wolves is 7 p.m.

Gameday 50/50 tickets are available now, plus the team will make the draws in their annual New Year’s Raffle during the second intermission giving away $40,000.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m.
