Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League

Kozun comments on major moves

The Nipawin Hawks have been silent on the ice since a 6-3 win in Yorkton on Nov. 28, but off the ice the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Club (SJHL) has been revitalizing their roster.

Just days after it was announced Ronan Buckberger will be the first Hawk to suit up in the World Junior ‘A’ Classic this month in Truro, N.S., the club got the 17-year-old star help on defense adding 2003-born defenseman Liam McInnis from the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

However, the acquisition left Nipawin with nine 20 year-olds on their roster, one more than the league allows teams to dress in a game. On Monday Nipawin announced that their longest tenured player, Joel Mabin was moved to Melville for a player development fee.

Kozun spoke Tuesday morning regarding the moves.

The Hawks have three home games this week starting with Weyburn on Wednesday. Nipawin plays host to Estevan on Friday and Saturday before closing the 2023 portion of the schedule with a home-and-home showdown with Melfort on Dec. 15 and 16.

Doors open at 6 p.m., an hour ahead of faceoff. The Hawks gameday Kevin’s Custom Ag 50/50 tickets with a guaranteed jackpot of at least $1,000 all season, will be available to purchase ahead of puck drop here.
