The Hawks have moved 2006 born defenseman Mason Eggen to Melville for 19-year-old forward Leo Jewitt.
Eggen, 20, was acquired from Kindersley last January. General Manager Tad Kozun said the Brooks, Alta. product was a solid addition for the Hawks and served the team well for the last 10 months.
“Mason came in last year at the trade deadline and did a good job for us when we were banged up last year,” Kozun said. “When you get a player like Leo you have to give up something, we are up against it at 20-year-olds, so this frees a spot as well with that.”
Eggen suited up for 31 games in Nipawin producing eight assists.
Jewitt hails from Indian Head, Sask. and has been in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) for three seasons. He’s played 60 games over three seasons compiling 12 goals and eight helpers along with 140 penalty minutes. Kozun said the centreman will make their already dynamic forward group deeper.
“Jewitt is a really good player and adds depth. We think he can really help us this year with his grit, tenacity, and in your face type play,” Kozun said.
Jewitt was also the captain of the AAA Under-18 Yorkton Maulers before making the jump to the SJHL. Kozun adding his leadership will be beneficial.
“His coaches had nothing but good things to say. I think he can come in, provide leadership, and he’s been in the playoffs which is a benefit as well. He brings experience and sandpaper into our group and will be a welcomed addition,” Kozun concluded.
The Hawks host Estevan Friday at the Centennial Arena then travel to Melville to mee the Jewitt’s former club on Saturday.
