The Hawks got down 3-0 in the first period in the first matchup of the year with Melfort on route to a 6-2 loss Saturday at the ‘Cage.’
Nipawin did respond in the second, Jack Drake scored his first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) goal early in the second. The Hawks pressed the reigning champs in the first half of the second period, earned a couple powerplays that they unfortunately couldn’t capitalize on. Shortly after killing a Mustang’s man advantage, Melfort took a 4-1 lead Nipawin couldn’t comeback from.
Konnor Watson added the second goal of his career in the third period.
Gage Roberts and Tyson Endall split the goaltending duties, Roberts suffered the loss.
The Hawks are now off until Friday when they host Notre Dame. The team will honour Greg Classen prior to the game.
