The Nipawin Hawks’ Farming with the Hawks project is moving into the final stages of the growing season, with harvest currently planned for September 22, weather permitting.
Throughout the project, support from local producers, businesses and agricultural partners has played an important role in keeping the crop moving forward.
“We are very fortunate to have great, supportive neighbours. When they reach out to see if your canola is ready to be swathed and then finish it in two days, that is great support,” said Terry Slusar.
The Hawks would like to thank Spencer Staffen of Staffen Farms for his continued support of the organization and for helping get the canola swathed and ready for harvest.
With swathing complete, attention now turns to harvest. The Hawks are hoping weather conditions cooperate over the coming days and that the crop can be harvested as planned on September 22.
Harvest will also provide an opportunity for Hawks players to experience another side of the project. Players will have the chance to spend time in the field, see firsthand what goes into harvesting a crop and gain some hands-on experience with an important part of the local agricultural community.
Lake Country Co-op will also be supporting the project on harvest day by providing a field lunch for those taking part.
Farming with the Hawks has been made possible through the contributions of local farms, agricultural businesses and community supporters who have donated products, equipment, expertise and time throughout the growing season.
The Nipawin Hawks would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this year’s project. As a community-supported organization, initiatives such as Farming with the Hawks provide valuable support to the hockey club while also giving players an opportunity to learn more about the agricultural community that supports them.
The Hawks now look forward to harvest day and hope for favourable weather and a smooth finish to this year’s crop.
