2025 Hawks Spring Seeding Update: A Community Crop with Community Roots

The Nipawin Hawks are proud to share an update on the 2025 crop project—a powerful example of what happens when local agriculture and local hockey work hand-in-hand.

Fall Foundations

The groundwork began last fall when Ravine Bank Farms—led by Denton and Mike Peifer—got an early jump by applying Anhydrous Ammonia to the 160-acre field. This essential nutrient boost was just the start of a team effort that would span months and bring in support from across the region.

Thanks to Lake Country Co-op, this key fertilizer application was fully sponsored, reinforcing their long-standing commitment to the Hawks and the local farming community.

Manure Matters: A North Field Collaboration

Our North Field got a major organic boost this spring with manure donated by Len and Jeff Fife, delivered by Meadow Croft Trucking, and expertly spread by Carson Baerg.

To ensure that manure was evenly integrated into the soil, Vince Munro came in this spring with the harrows—breaking it up and prepping the field for seed.

Treatment & Tillage

The 160-acre field’s wheat crop benefitted from a donation of high-quality seed treatment from Mike Wassill at BASF. Meanwhile, Zak and Spencer at FBN contributed Glyphosate for a burn-off on the North Field—critical for controlling weeds ahead of seeding.

To supercharge the effectiveness of the burn-off, Mac Clarke provided two additional agronomic tools—TM Agriculture and PH Plus—that were mixed with the treatment.

Once again, Ravine Bank Farms stepped up and handled the spraying of the North Field.

Seeding Success

On May 4, 2025, the Peifers were back in the cab, harrowing and seeding the full 160-acre field to wheat. Another big thank-you to Nutrien Ag from Arborfield for donating Phosphate fertilizer, ensuring our wheat has the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Just two days later, Lake Country Co-op was back in the mix, spreading 46-0-0 nitrogen on the North Field on May 6—further reinforcing their role as a foundational supporter of this entire project.

Going Native with Broom-Grass

Meanwhile, on May 20, 2025, our North Field saw a new twist—Brome-grass, donated by DFL (Pic Seeds), was planted to encourage native grass growth and long-term sustainability. Wade Annand from AG Grow handled the seeding, bringing professional care to this important environmental effort.

The Road Ahead

With all fields planted and our partnerships firmly in place, we’re now watching the skies. Moisture will not only give our crops a strong start but will also help ease the threat of ongoing forest fires to the north.

Spraying will commence in the coming weeks, and with it, we’ll continue to rely on the support, knowledge, and generosity of our agricultural community.
